305 has 17-19% chromium, 10.5-13% nickel (higher than 302), and 0.12% max carbon, reducing work hardening. 302 contains 17-19% chromium, 8-10% nickel, 0.15% max carbon, boosting strength via work hardening.​

 

305 is more ductile and resistant to work hardening, making it ideal for deep drawing and complex shapes like sinks. 302 is stronger but less formable, suitable for parts needing tension like springs.​

 

Both offer excellent resistance in atmospheric conditions and mild chemicals. 305's higher nickel doesn't significantly improve corrosion resistance but enhances its ability to retain ductility during forming.​

 

302 has higher tensile strength (620 MPa vs 515 MPa for 305) due to more carbon. 305 has higher elongation (40% vs 30% for 302), making it better for intricate forming operations.​

 

Where are 305 and 302 commonly used?​

305 is in drawn products like hollowware and decorative metalwork. 302 is used in springs, clips, and fasteners where strength from cold working is critical.
